Every autumn the wedding trend lists arrive, and most of them read like a mood board someone made before checking what couples actually do. I like trend pieces that start from search data instead, because searches are what people do when they are really planning. So this guide is built on Bridebook's 2027 trend forecast, which draws on three years of UK search data, and then I add what each trend means once there is a camera in front of it.
One caveat before we start. A search figure tells you what people are curious about, not what they will book. Treat everything below as direction, not instruction.
Whimsy is the headline trend for 2027
Bridebook calls whimsy the hero trend: small, joyful, personal details taking the place of formality. Pinterest searches for “whimsy weddings” are up 1,000% year on year, and searches for “whimsy doodles” are up 1,500%. Think handwritten menus, illustrated stationery, mismatched chairs, a table plan drawn by a friend.
From behind the camera, whimsy is good news. Personal details give a photographer something to find. A hand-lettered sign, a pocketful of confetti someone made themselves or a cake with a wobble in it all tell the story of a particular day. If you choose whimsy, give your photographer a short list of the handmade things you care about. We will photograph them before the room fills up and the details get moved.
The private wedding
The second 2027 trend is the private wedding: curated guest lists, phone-free ceremonies and, in some cases, non-disclosure agreements for guests. The same report says UK searches for elopements have more than doubled since 2022, and that searches for registry office weddings run at about 5,700 a month. Registry office weddings made up 12% of UK weddings in 2025, up from 9% in 2024.
I cover this properly in our guide to private weddings, elopements and registry office ceremonies, including how photography works when the room is small and the rules are strict. The short version: a smaller day does not mean a smaller story, and the people who choose it are often the ones who care most about the pictures.
Planning a smaller, more personal 2027 wedding?
Tell us the date, the venue and how many people will be in the room. We will tell you honestly what coverage makes sense, which is not always the biggest package.
- Check your date. Send your date and venue through the contact page and we will reply with availability and a quote.
- See where prices start. Weddings from £2,500 (coverage begins at eight hours), engagement sessions from £500, portraits from £150 on the pricing page.
- Look at real days. Browse full weddings in our galleries, or read what couples say.
Butter yellow is the colour to watch
Bridebook names butter yellow the colour of 2026 and says it is still climbing. UK searches for “butter yellow” reached 91,000 in a single month, up 138% on the year before, and “butter yellow wedding” drew about 3,000 UK searches over three months, up 417%. Sage green is moving the other way: from more than 4,100 searches a month in January 2022 to roughly 700 to 860 now. I wrote a separate guide on how butter yellow behaves on camera, because yellow is trickier than it looks.
Dry hire, wedding weekends and the aperitivo hour
Three trends are about how the event is run rather than how it looks. Searches for “dry hire venue” reached 2,000 in June 2026, up 188% year on year, which tells me couples want control over catering and drinks. Bridebook also flags the wedding weekend, where the celebration stretches over several days, and an Italian-style aperitivo hour, with Google searches for “Campari Spritz” up 170% over three months.
Dry hire especially matters for photography, because it usually means a caterer you chose and a running order you control. See our dry hire guide for what to check. If you are planning a multi-day wedding, our Yoruba wedding planning guide shows how coverage works across a traditional ceremony and a white wedding.
Florals and details: wildflowers, lace and cakes
UK searches for “wildflower wedding” are up 66% over twelve months and sit above 28,000 a month, and Pinterest searches for flower installations are up almost 200%. Loose, meadow-style arrangements photograph beautifully in daylight and can look flat under mixed indoor lighting, so ask your florist to bring a few stems with more structure for the dark parts of the evening.
On cakes, Bridebook reports that the naked cake peaked above 5,100 searches a month in January 2022 and is now around 2,700. Tower-style desserts are climbing instead: Pinterest searches for “tiramisu tower” are up 700%. A tall dessert table makes a handsome photograph, so tell us where it will stand and we will plan the light around it.
What is fading
Lace searches have fallen from more than 4,700 a month in early 2022 to between 2,200 and 2,900, and bridal suits have settled at about 430 to 530 a month after peaking near 1,150. Neither is disappearing. A more useful reading is that couples are choosing these things because they love them, not because they are in fashion.
The report also notes a gap between social media and search: chartreuse and burgundy dominate feeds but barely register in UK searches. If you are choosing a palette, ask yourself whether you would still want it in the album in twenty years. That test has never failed me.
What a photographer would do with this list
I read trend reports the way a pilot reads a weather forecast. It helps me plan, but I still look out of the window. Here is how I would use the 2027 list if I were planning a wedding:
- Pick two trends, not ten. A day with two clear ideas is easier to photograph and feels more like you.
- Protect the timeline. Whimsy details, a welcome evening and a late-night set all take time. Our photography timeline guide shows how to fit them in.
- Choose substance over novelty. The pictures people return to are the ones with real expressions in them. We explain why in why documentary photography won 2026.
Rising, steady and fading: a quick scorecard
If you only have two minutes, this is how the numbers read according to Bridebook's 2027 trend forecast:
- Rising: whimsy and handmade details, butter yellow, wildflower and meadow florals, tower desserts, dry hire venues, the private wedding, registry office weddings.
- Holding: late-night entertainment (“wedding entertainment ideas” draws about 1,300 searches a month) and the aperitivo hour.
- Cooling: sage green, the naked cake, lace and bridal suits.
- Loud online, quiet in search: chartreuse and burgundy.
Short engagements are changing the planning window
The same report notes that about a fifth of couples now marry within twelve months of getting engaged, against an average engagement of around 26 months. For a photographer that matters, because Saturdays in the busiest months can already be reserved by the time a short-engagement couple starts calling. If you are planning for 2027, the sensible order is date, venue, photographer and then everything else. I would rather you secured the people who book up and chose the napkins later.
Trends for multicultural and Nigerian weddings in 2027
The Bridebook list is built on UK-wide searches, so it does not say much about the way our clients celebrate. Here is how I see these trends meeting the celebrations we photograph most. Wedding weekends already happen in many Yoruba and Igbo families, with a traditional ceremony and a white wedding on separate days. The private wedding idea can sit alongside a large reception, for example a small legal ceremony followed by the big celebration. And dry hire halls with a family caterer are a long-standing habit, not a new one. If any of that sounds like your plans, read our Yoruba wedding planning guide and the aso-ebi colour code guide.
How to choose a trend without regretting it
Here is the test I suggest. Write down the three moments you most want in the photographs: perhaps the first look, a parent’s reaction and the dance floor. Now check whether each trend you are considering helps those moments or competes with them. Whimsical details can support them. A heavy installation that blocks the aisle will not. Butter yellow can suit a bright, airy room and fight with a dark one. When a trend serves the moments, keep it. When it only serves the feed, drop it.
Questions couples ask about 2027 wedding trends
What are the biggest wedding trends for 2027?
According to Bridebook, whimsy is the headline trend, with the private wedding, butter yellow, dry hire venues, wildflower florals and an Italian-style drinks hour close behind.
What is the wedding colour of 2027?
Butter yellow is the colour Bridebook highlights, with UK searches for it still rising. Sage green is declining. Choose a palette you will not tire of, and have your photographer check how it looks in the light at your venue.
Are small weddings still popular in 2027?
Yes. Bridebook reports that elopement searches have more than doubled since 2022 and that registry office weddings rose from 9% to 12% of UK weddings between 2024 and 2025.
Should I follow wedding trends at all?
Use them as a menu, not a rulebook. A trend works when it reflects something you actually love, and it will date quickly when it does not.
How early should I book a photographer for a 2027 wedding?
As soon as you have a date and venue, especially for Saturdays in summer. You can send your date to us and we will reply with availability.
