Documentary, editorial and traditional describe different ways of working at a wedding. They affect how much direction you receive, how portraits are made and how the rest of the day is covered. When choosing a photographer for a 2026 wedding, ask what each term means in their practice and agree the family groups and portraits you want alongside it.
What changes between the styles
The useful distinction is the photographer's behaviour. Find out when they give instructions, how they prepare a portrait and how much of the wedding they photograph without intervening. Many photographers combine approaches, so a single label may tell you little.
Traditional coverage uses more direction. The photographer arranges people, asks them to look towards the lens and may repeat a posed kiss if the first photograph was blocked. Those sessions need time in the schedule. An hour and a half away from the guests may suit some couples, while others want a shorter portrait window.
Editorial coverage gives deliberate attention to light, posture, clothing and background, with a magazine spread as a reference. A day may include twenty to forty carefully planned portraits alongside other photographs. Ask how much of the afternoon that work needs and whether you would enjoy the direction involved.
Documentary coverage follows events with little direction or repetition. The photographer watches for what may happen next and chooses a position before it does. That lets a conversation or reaction continue without asking the people in it to perform again.
A ten hour day with documentary coverage can produce 3,000 to 5,000 frames, since several may be taken through one brief moment. Selecting and grading them can require twenty to thirty hours after the wedding. Editorial work may produce about half that volume while taking more time on individual files. The quantities vary, so assess the finished galleries rather than treating frame count as a measure of quality.
Following the wedding day
Ask how the photographer covers preparations, the ceremony, reception and evening. Each part has a different pace and gives you different photographs to keep.
Preparations may need ninety minutes to two hours. Dresses on hangers, a mother fastening buttons and a groom handling cufflinks can be photographed with little direction. Allow time for those details if they matter to you, rather than begin the booking immediately before the ceremony.
A register office ceremony often lasts twenty to thirty minutes, while a church service may take forty five to sixty. Some rooms allow only one photography position and prohibit flash. The photographer needs to know the running order and be ready for the ring exchange. Read GOV.UK's marriage and civil partnership guidance while arranging the legal ceremony, and confirm photography rules with the venue.
The drinks reception can offer plenty of conversations, greetings and reunions to photograph. A ninety minute reception may contribute around a third of a gallery, though that is an estimate and varies by wedding. Relatives who have not met in four years may spend this time together. Discuss how it will be covered alongside groups and portraits.
Speeches need attention to both the speaker and the people reacting elsewhere at the table. A dim room with bright windows can make that challenging. For the first dance, the photographer needs to work with the DJ's lights or add suitable light while keeping the atmosphere visible.

Documentary photography budgets in 2026
An undirected style does not necessarily mean a lower fee. Time spent observing the day and selecting a large number of photographs still needs to be covered, alongside editing and the business's operating costs.
Bridebook's 2026 report gives average UK photography spending of around £1,484. Many experienced photographers in England quote £1,500 to £2,500 for a full day. London and the South East can be higher; London quotes range from entry examples around £900 to well above £4,000. A second photographer may be useful with roughly 120 guests or separate preparation locations and can add about £400 to £600.
A quote may account for eight to ten hours on the day, twenty to thirty hours of editing, travel and accommodation, insurance and backup equipment. Ask about public liability and professional indemnity cover, two camera bodies and recording to dual cards. Those safeguards help reduce the risk of equipment or storage problems during events that cannot be repeated.
An illustrative overall job is roughly forty hours spread across two months, with ten of those at the wedding. That is a description of the wider work, not a delivery deadline. Our wedding photography packages and pricing set out the current options; confirm the schedule and inclusions in the quote.
Agreeing portraits, groups and difficult light
A mostly documentary gallery can still include planned photographs. Discuss these three needs early, so the chosen style supports the pictures you want to keep.
If you want a portrait to print at A2 above the fireplace, tell the photographer. Candid photographs may have warmth and interest without the angle or composition you want for a large print. A deliberate portrait session can provide that additional image.
Family groups need a list and some organisation. A photograph with everyone looking at the lens may matter now and in twenty years. Ten to twelve combinations at two to three minutes each can take around thirty minutes. Agree that time and nominate helpers rather than hope the group assembles by itself.
A dark November barn may need additional light. In another room, moving two people three feet towards a window could be enough. Discuss what the photographer would adjust, since an observational style still has to work within the actual light.
My approach combines those needs. Roughly ninety per cent of the day is observational, with twenty to thirty minutes set aside for directed portraits, often near golden hour, and a separate organised block for family groups. The portrait window occupies about half an hour; confirm group timing as well so the complete plan fits your reception.

Preparing for cultural ceremonies
A wedding with several cultural or religious events needs more detail than a standard ceremony, meal and dance timetable. Give the photographer the running order and explain which moments matter to the families.
A Yoruba engagement can include the groom and his friends prostrating, an exchange between the two alaga, the bride being unveiled to her family and money spray during dancing. The MC may guide these events as they happen. Familiarity helps a photographer find a position before the moment begins. The traditional and Nigerian ceremony portfolio includes examples of this coverage.
Exposure and grading also need attention. A preset that works on pale skin can make brown skin look grey or green if used without adjustment. Meter for the person while checking bright clothing, then assess each scene during editing. As a British Nigerian photographer, I pay particular attention to keeping skin tones accurate through changing conditions.
Cameraboss was named Creative Photographer of the Year at the Creative Industry Awards 2024. You can assess the more directed part of the work in our editorial sessions before the wedding, alongside the ceremony galleries.
Assessing a photographer's approach
Use these four checks to understand the work beyond the selected portfolio and to agree what will be included.
- Ask for a complete wedding gallery. Twelve chosen photographs from three years of work cannot show how one day was handled. A set of four to six hundred lets you assess the quieter middle periods and dark reception as well as the favourite portraits.
- Notice how often people look into the lens. If more than about a quarter of a gallery is posed, ask how that relates to the couple's requests and the photographer's usual balance of direction and observation.
- Ask how the drinks reception is covered. Discuss time spent circulating, organising groups and preparing portraits so the conversations and reunions you want photographed fit the plan.
- Confirm the image count and delivery schedule in writing. If a quote lists 300 edited images, ask to see an example of that selection and confirm whether previews are included and when. These details should come from the booking terms.
An observational approach still needs preparation. Knowing the likely sequence and watching the people involved helps the photographer be ready when an expression changes.
The client galleries show complete days, and the experience and process page explains how a booking moves from enquiry to delivery.
Common questions
Does documentary coverage cost less than editorial? Not necessarily. The number of photographs to select and edit can be substantial. Many photographers quote £1,500 to £2,500 for full day coverage across styles, while the cited 2026 UK average is around £1,484. Compare the work included rather than infer the fee from a label.
Can we include formal family groups?Agree them before booking and prepare a list. Ten to twelve groups may take about thirty minutes with a helper from each family gathering people. Without that briefing, the same groups could take an hour. Confirm how they fit around the reception.
Would a second photographer help?Consider one with roughly 120 guests, separate preparation locations or simultaneous events in different rooms. Ask what their role would be. An illustrative additional cost is £400 to £600.
When will the finished gallery arrive?Agree the delivery schedule in writing before booking, including any previews. For CameraBoss coverage, see current pricing and contact us about your plans.
Can documentary and editorial photographs be made on one day?Yes. Observational coverage can run through the day with a protected twenty to thirty minute portrait session, often during the last hour of useful daylight. Discuss the balance you want and the time available.
