Nottingham offers an Elizabethan mansion in a deer park, a Georgian hall beside a lake, a red brick barn on the Welbeck Estate and a civic ballroom in Old Market Square. Their rooms and surroundings need different approaches to photographs. Think about the light, journeys and portrait time while choosing the venue, so the coverage fits the day you are planning.
City, country house and barn weddings
A Council House ceremony can be followed by a walk or short taxi journey to a restaurant or Lace Market bar. At Colwick Hall or Wollaton Hall, several parts of the wedding may take place on one site. A barn towards Sherwood or the Welbeck Estate needs a wider Nottinghamshire travel plan. Give the photographer the actual locations for preparations, ceremony and reception.
About two thirds of UK weddings fall between May and September. Popular Nottingham venues can book June, July and August Saturdays twelve to eighteen months ahead. Midweek dates may cost less; Colwick Hall has advertised savings around a thousand pounds on some Monday to Thursday packages. Confirm the current offer and inclusions directly with the venue.
A July Saturday can have daylight until roughly 9.30pm, allowing portraits after the wedding breakfast. In November, sunset may be around 4.15pm. If your ceremony begins at 2pm, check how much daylight will remain when it finishes and which photographs need it. Later reception coverage will need its own lighting plan.
Nottingham weddings also include Nigerian and Yoruba celebrations, South Asian ceremonies and weekends combining two faiths. Each has a different running order. Tell the photographer which events will take place and when, so the timing and lighting plan covers them.

Four venues and their photography options
These settings offer different spaces for the ceremony and portraits. Confirm the room, capacity and access arrangements while discussing how the photographs will fit.
- Nottingham Council House in Old Market Square has a Ballroom seating around 120 and smaller rooms including the Robin Hood Suite for twelve. The formal interiors have limited natural light, so fast lenses and higher ISO settings can be useful. Outside, Old Market Square and the Exchange Arcade provide nearby portrait options within a five minute walk.
- Colwick Hall in Colwick Park has sixty acres of parkland and a lake. The Grand Ballroom has a painted ceiling supported by four Ionic pillars, with ceremony and breakfast capacity around ninety. The Lakeside Pavilion accommodates up to five hundred. The Champagne Lounge opens onto the lawn, and the oak beside the water is a portrait option. The high decorative ballroom ceiling makes bounced flash less straightforward; discuss lighting placed away from the camera.
- Wollaton Hall and Deer Park centres on a Grade I listed Elizabethan mansion in 500 acres. The Great Hall has a hammer beam ceiling and carved stone screens; the Prospect Room above has panoramic views across Nottingham, and roof access has been offered for portraits. Confirm that access with the venue. The Great Hall is relatively dark, and reaching a deer park portrait spot can mean a substantial walk from the drinks reception.
- Hazel Gap Barn at Budby near Edwinstowe is on the Welbeck Estate, with two watchtowers and a sheltered courtyard. It lists 150 seated for civil ceremonies, 250 for an evening reception and a late licence to 1am. The Oak Room faces the gardens and has useful daylight. After dark, courtyard fire pits and fairy lights need a plan that keeps faces clear while retaining the ambient glow, such as flash with a slower shutter.
Budgeting for Nottingham wedding photography
General UK full day photography guides quote around £1,400 to £1,800. Regional comparisons can put London nearer £2,800, more than 50 per cent higher, and Yorkshire or parts of the North nearer £1,250. These are broad figures; compare actual quotes for the coverage you want.
Nottingham and the East Midlands tend to be around or below the national average. An illustrative range for an experienced photographer covering a full day is £1,300 to £2,200, with editorial and luxury work above it. If a quote is below about £900, check the hours, insurance, backup equipment and editing included instead of judging by the total alone.
A ten hour wedding can produce 3,000 to 5,000 raw files. Selecting and grading 400 to 600 finished photographs may take 20 to 30 hours. If you receive a £700 full day quote, ask how much selection and editing it includes and look carefully at complete evening galleries. That conversation is more useful than making assumptions about the price.
Registrar fees are separate. Nottingham City Council has different prices for Council House weekdays and Saturdays, with exclusive use reception arrangements priced separately. Check the Nottingham City Council registrar pages before choosing the date. CameraBoss coverage options are on the pricing page.

Travel and portrait time
Allow for the walk to the ceremony room, journeys between venues and daylight at the portrait location. A short distance on the map can still take a meaningful part of the afternoon.
Old Market Square is pedestrianised, and cars stop on nearby streets rather than directly at the Council House. Allow about ten minutes for the walk, more in rain or a long dress. The tram also runs through the centre. On a match day at the City Ground or Meadow Lane, traffic around Trent Bridge can be busier in the two hours either side of kick off. Check the fixture and route.
Hazel Gap Barn is around forty minutes from the city centre. Wollaton Hall is about fifteen minutes away, followed by its approach through the deer park. A city ceremony and county reception therefore need a proper transfer window. Keep portrait time separate so the journey does not use all the evening light.
At roughly 52.95 degrees north, Nottingham's sunset moves from about 9.30pm in late June to 3.50pm near the December solstice. Check your exact date before fixing portraits. A September ceremony at 1pm can leave room for evening photographs around 7pm. A February ceremony at 1pm may mean scheduling daylight portraits before roughly 4.30pm, with added light needed later.
Possible portrait settings include Old Market Square, the Exchange Arcade, Lace Market brickwork, Highfields Park by the lake and the parkland at Wollaton and Colwick. For rain, agree a specific covered position with the venue. Check that it accommodates the photographs and people you have planned.
Working with CameraBoss in Nottingham
I work from Leicester and London and cover weddings around the country. Nottingham can be under an hour from the Leicester base, which helps when arranging a venue visit. Derby, Leicester, Birmingham and Sheffield are also listed on the areas we cover page. Confirm the plan for your own locations when enquiring.
My documentary and editorial approach has developed through British Nigerian, Yoruba, South Asian and mixed culture celebrations. I discuss the ceremony's running order, including money spray and any kneeling involving the bride's family. Knowing when those events happen helps me choose a position that records the people taking part and their relatives' responses.
I pay attention to each person's skin tone when exposing and grading the photographs, particularly as the room light changes. The work was recognised with Creative Photographer of the Year at the Creative Industry Awards 2024. Complete galleries let you assess the photographs themselves across a whole day.
If you would like photography and film, discuss how the teams will coordinate in a darker room so their lighting supports both. You can see examples on the wedding films page and read previous couples' accounts on the testimonials page.
Common questions
How are travel costs for Nottingham agreed?Give us the postcode and coverage times so travel can be confirmed in the quote. Include any venues further into Nottinghamshire, such as Hazel Gap Barn near Edwinstowe, when describing your plans.
When should we enquire for a Nottingham summer Saturday?Popular June, July and August venues often take bookings twelve to eighteen months ahead, and photographers may follow a similar pattern. Midweek and quieter season dates can have more availability and different venue prices.
Do you cover Derby, Leicester and Nottinghamshire?Yes. Derby, Leicester, Sheffield, Birmingham and nearby towns are among the regular coverage locations. If your wedding takes place across two places over a weekend, provide the full schedule so the journeys can be planned.
Can the dark Council House rooms be photographed?Fast lenses and higher ISO settings can help in the Ballroom and smaller rooms. Confirm the registrar's photography and flash rules beforehand. Also leave enough time for the walk from the vehicle to the ceremony room.
Where could we have portraits if it rains?Discuss the Exchange Arcade, the Champagne Lounge at Colwick Hall or sheltered courtyard buildings at Hazel Gap with your photographer and venue. Confirm access and space for the photographs you want before the wedding.
