A photography budget needs to fit the events and hours you want covered. A quote for a 2027 wedding may differ from what a friend paid in 2024, especially if the locations or coverage are different. If you are planning eighteen months ahead, compare the actual work included and confirm which price and terms apply to your date.
UK photography prices and coverage
Bridebook's 2026 UK Wedding Report, based on more than 7,000 couples, gives average photography spending of £1,484. Hitched's separate sample puts it around £1,590. Those averages cover different bookings, including a two hour register office ceremony and a fourteen hour celebration across several events.
For full day coverage, a useful illustrative range is £1,600 to £3,000. Above £3,000, check whether the quote includes a second photographer, video or another specific addition; the price alone will not tell you. Below £1,200, ask about hours, editing, staffing, insurance and backup equipment. Compare those answers alongside complete galleries.
Regional comparisons put London full day packages around £2,813, about 55% above the national figure, Yorkshire near £1,247 and Scotland around £1,540. Local operating costs and the market affect pricing as well as coverage. A Leicester photographer working in Birmingham and Nottingham has different costs from a Shoreditch studio, so use the figures as context for individual quotes.
A planning allowance of 10 to 15% of the wedding budget is often used for photography. With quoted average UK wedding totals between £20,604 and £21,990, that suggests roughly £2,000 to £3,300. Adjust the allocation to the photographs and coverage you value, rather than treat a percentage as a requirement.
Enquiring for a 2027 wedding
If you are planning in 2026 for a 2027 date, ask about availability while working out the budget. A current price list does not show which photographers are free for the wedding you are arranging.
May to September Saturdays are commonly booked 12 to 18 months ahead. For enquiries in mid 2026, check the date directly. Even a calendar with three quarters of its 2027 Saturdays reserved may still have your date available. An individual photographer cannot cover overlapping events in separate places, so confirm the actual staffing rather than rely on a general impression of demand.
Some businesses review prices annually, often in autumn. A possible change of 5 to 10% is a budgeting example: a £2,200 quote in August 2026 might become £2,350 by January 2027. That is not a prediction for every supplier. Ask whether signing the contract and paying a retainer fixes your quote, and which changes could affect it. If you wait six months, both availability and the offered price may be different.
Set the date and venue and arrange the registrar as needed. Check the legal requirements on GOV.UK's marriage guidance, then enquire about photography while the coverage can still be planned. There is little benefit in treating it automatically as the fourth or fifth supplier to contact.

Work after the wedding
The quote covers more than attendance on the day. Selection, editing and any album work all take time after the ceremony and reception are over.
A ten hour wedding can produce 3,000 to 5,000 raw photographs to review. Selecting the usable frames may take six to ten hours before editing begins. Grading 600 to 900 chosen images across warm church light and cooler evening scenes can take another 15 to 25 hours. With album design and delivery, the desk work may reach 30 to 40 hours, roughly a working week beyond the wedding itself.
Equipment and safeguards also carry costs. Ask about two camera bodies, dual card recording, public liability and professional indemnity insurance, and cloud and local backups. Some venues request insurance details before granting access. Equipment updates, including lenses replaced around every four to five years, can also form part of a business's costs. Confirm the actual backup and storage arrangements instead of assuming they last indefinitely.
Compare the finished work and the process behind it when reviewing quotes. A similar number of hours on the wedding day can come with quite different editing, album and delivery arrangements.
Choosing the hours and events
Use your running order to decide what matters most. More hours, a second photographer and an album serve different needs, so compare them as separate choices.
A twelve hour booking may include hours ten to twelve of similar dancing photographs, while ten hours might cover preparations through the first hour of dancing. Look at your own schedule before deciding. If both partners prepare separately, a second photographer during ten hours may be more useful than twelve hours from one person. That depends on which events you want recorded.
Include cultural and traditional events from the outset. A Nigerian engagement or Asian mehndi before the main wedding may need separate coverage. If your celebration has two or three events, give the photographer the whole schedule while enquiring; adding another day later depends on availability.
An album is worth budgeting for if you want a printed record. You do not necessarily need to choose a 60 page layout before seeing the photographs. Ask whether you can decide its size after the gallery arrives, while setting aside the budget earlier.

Planning CameraBoss coverage
Our current pricing gives the coverage options. Tell us about your plans so we can discuss the events, locations and hours you need.
If you also want wedding videography, discuss how the photo and film teams will work together. They may share the same three metres of space during a ceremony or first kiss. A coordinated plan can help them choose positions and lighting that suit both, whether they are booked together or separately.
As a British Nigerian photographer, I plan around the running order of ceremonies such as a Yoruba engagement. Knowing when an event begins helps me be in position before it happens. The Aworan traditional ceremony collection shows examples. I also pay attention to exposure and grading for darker skin as the light changes. The work was recognised with Creative Photographer of the Year at the Creative Industry Awards 2024.
Putting together a 2027 photography budget
Start with your events, locations and desired photographs. These checks help you turn that plan into a coverage request that suppliers can quote.
- List each event and date. A Friday traditional ceremony and a Saturday wedding need coverage across two bookings, with staffing and editing accounted for from the start.
- Choose the hours from the running order. Nine to eleven hours may suit many weddings, while fourteen may be needed for a longer celebration. Check when preparations begin and which reception events you want photographed.
- Use 12% as one planning example. On a £22,000 wedding that gives £2,640 for photography. It may fit full day coverage outside central London, but compare real quotes before allocating the rest.
- You could reserve 10% for possible 2027 price changes if you have not yet booked. Alternatively, ask what price and terms would be fixed by signing now. A reserve is a budgeting choice, not an assurance about future rates.
- Read the delivery and access terms. Decide whether a 16 week turnaround and 90 day online gallery would suit you, and ask about image count, album delivery and downloads as well as the total price.
Look through one complete wedding before booking. Forty selected photographs from four years can show a style, but the full set shows preparations, quiet periods and the evening. You can browse the CameraBoss client galleries, while the experience page explains the process from enquiry to delivery.
Common questions
Could a £1,500 budget cover a UK wedding? It may cover a full day in parts of the Midlands, North and Wales, depending on the photographer and inclusions. In London and the South East, it may instead cover fewer hours or one photographer. Ask for a quote based on your schedule.
Why does a day of photography cost more than a day's attendance?A ten hour wedding can generate 3,000 to 5,000 frames and another 30 to 40 hours of selection, grading and delivery. The fee also supports equipment, insurance and duplicated storage. Confirm which services and safeguards are included.
Could the price change before our 2027 wedding? It can. Annual changes of 5 to 10% are a planning example, not a guarantee. Ask whether the contract and retainer fix your quote and how any later changes to coverage would be charged.
What share of the budget could we allow?A range of 10% to 15% is a useful starting example, with 12% providing a middle figure. On a wedding budget around £21,000, that is roughly £2,500. Adjust it after deciding how much coverage you need.
Would a second photographer be useful?Consider one if both partners prepare separately, the guest list is above about 80 or important events overlap. Agree what they would cover, since a second person helps only if their role fits the schedule.
