For a Birmingham church wedding, I would agree camera positions with the minister before the day. Music, prayer and the congregation's movement all affect what we can photograph. Quiet coverage helps the couple stay with the service while we record the permitted moments.
A Nigerian or multicultural white wedding may continue with family photographs, an outfit change and a reception with its own entrances, speeches and music. Allow time for those transitions, and agree the filming plan early so the church and reception coverage fit together.
If you are planning for 2027, start with the church's photography instructions, then set the family-photo and transfer timetable. The local examples below show why each church needs a separate conversation about permission and service etiquette.
Agree photography and filming with your church
Ask your church and minister what is permitted during your service, including flash and camera movement. Congregations and buildings have different requirements, so confirm the instructions for the place where you are marrying.
The Church of England's advice on professional wedding photography asks couples to speak to their vicar beforehand about photographs during worship. It recommends putting the vicar and photographer in touch and discussing the route at the rehearsal where possible. I would use that conversation to agree positions before the wedding morning.
Birmingham Cathedral welcomes personal photographs on ordinary visits, but its guidance restricts photography during services and when the choir is in the nave. Cathedral and Cathedral Square wedding photography is linked to weddings held there. Professional filming needs express agreement and may incur a fee. Ask for permission before considering the square for portraits after a wedding elsewhere.
In the Jewellery Quarter, St Paul’s Church accepts wedding enquiries. Its venue-hire page describes seating for over 300 at events; confirm the capacity for your actual ceremony. Ask about access, rehearsal, flash, tripods and time outside. The parish also describes an ongoing roof-repair fundraising programme, so check the arrangements for your date.
St Martin in the Bull Ring allows ordinary visitor photography and asks visitors to avoid photographs during worship. Obtain separate wedding-day instructions if you are marrying there, since the visitor guidance does not establish professional photography permission.
Ask the minister to confirm permitted camera positions and whether photographs are allowed during vows and signing. Discuss video recording, equipment storage and the church exit too. Send the agreed instructions to the photography team and your coordinator.
Planning coverage during the white-wedding service
I would arrive early to check the light, meet the church contact and choose a quiet position clear of family, choir and clergy. Any restricted area near the altar needs to stay clear. The agreed viewpoint should let us work without interrupting prayer.
The Church of England says a photographer may need to remain at the back of the aisle until later in the service if moving forward would distract worshippers. Agree that in advance so we can prepare the cameras for a fixed position.
I would plan permitted coverage of the following moments:
- Before the service, photograph the exterior, order of service, arrivals and any choir or musicians the church permits.
- For the entrance and vows, use stable compositions from the agreed positions.
- During prayers and blessings, remain discreet and watch for family reactions without walking through the congregation.
- Confirm the signing position and recessional route, since the paperwork may happen away from the main aisle.
Video needs its own agreement. The Church of England filming guidance covers safety, music copyright and performers' rights. Still-photography permission does not establish permission to record live music or stream the service. Ask the church and videographer to settle those requirements before wedding week.

Allow time for the exit and family photographs
After the service, I would leave room to photograph the couple emerging and greeting parents and guests. Family groups need some organisation: thirty relatives each arranging their own photographs can delay the departure.
Agree a short exit sequence and immediate-family group list beforehand. Ask one person from each family to call people forward. Start with parents, grandparents, siblings, witnesses and the wedding party. Around twenty minutes can be a planning target, adjusted for your guest count and the church's rules.
The outside plan depends on your church. Around St Paul’s Square, historic façades and walking portraits may be possible if access and weather allow; keep entrances and footpaths clear. At Birmingham Cathedral, follow its Cathedral Square photography rules. St Martin in the Bull Ring is in a busy shopping district. Keep portraits compact and account for the crowds before planning a group of fifty relatives there.
My starting order would be the exit, the couple with both parents, each set of parents, siblings, elders and the wedding party, then couple portraits. For a larger wedding, cousins, friends and wider Aso-Ebi groups can have a reception slot. Guests can travel while the couple finishes nearby photographs.
Our Birmingham Nigerian wedding planning guide has further advice for a white wedding, traditional celebration and reception across the same weekend.
Travel and outfit changes before the reception
After the church blessing, relatives may regroup while the couple travels and the wedding party changes outfits. The decorator may still be finishing the room, and the MC may be preparing entrances. Allow time for each transition before scheduling the first reception event.
Ask your coordinator to record the church address, guest departure plan, reception access time and travel route. Include changing-room access for the couple and the time of the first formal event. Travel between a city-centre church and Edgbaston needs its own allowance; five minutes will rarely accommodate travel, changing, food and portraits together.
For a reception example, see Jumoke and Dami’s Yoruba wedding at Edgbaston Hall. It shows our Birmingham work and the reception's architecture and family programme. Use it as a reception reference; the example does not identify any of the churches discussed here as their ceremony venue.
Some Yoruba weddings have a separate engagement led by an Alaga. Igbo and other Nigerian celebrations may have different traditional sequences, while mixed-heritage couples may combine elements or use separate dates. I would agree coverage for the Christian service and each cultural celebration according to your family's programme.
I would check these arrangements with your coordinator:
- Let guests leave for the reception before the couple's short portrait walk.
- Allow separate buffers for travel and outfit changes.
- Keep an agreed room ready for the couple, with a family member managing access.
- Give the MC, photographer and videographer the same running order, including entrances and speeches.
Those allowances leave time for greetings and unplanned moments while keeping the important family photographs within reach.

Choosing church and reception coverage for 2027
I start with the service time, church instructions, reception address and guest count. Those details help determine the hours and number of camera operators before we discuss the price of the coverage.
For an illustrative 12.30pm church service, preparation coverage might start in the morning, with time to reach church and speak to the coordinator before the entrance. Suppose the service ends around 1.30pm: family photographs and a short nearby walk could follow, then reception coverage when the room and guests are ready. This is a planning example; confirm the service duration and access with your church.
Before the date, I would request the minister's photography instructions, a church contact, filming or music restrictions and a family-photo shortlist. If you book a second photographer, both need agreed positions. Quiet cameras and flash use should follow the church's instructions during worship.
I would also ask about the scope of the day:
- Is this the legal church ceremony, a blessing after a civil marriage or one of several wedding events?
- Who needs to be photographed before leaving the church?
- Does the reception include a grand entrance, a traditional clothing change or a separate cultural programme?
- Do you want a longer documentary record or a shorter church-and-portrait booking?

Frequently asked questions
Can a photographer take pictures during a Birmingham church wedding?
Often, but permission depends on the particular church and minister. The Church of England asks couples to agree the plan with the vicar; Birmingham Cathedral publishes additional restrictions. Never assume flash, movement or filming is permitted.
Can we have wedding portraits in Birmingham Cathedral Square if we marry elsewhere?
Do not assume so. Birmingham Cathedral states that wedding photography in its building and Cathedral Square is connected to weddings held at the Cathedral, and professional use otherwise requires prior permission.
Should we book two photographers for a Nigerian white wedding?
Two photographers can help with separate preparations or overlapping moments in a large church-to-reception programme. A smaller service may need only one. I recommend the team after seeing your itinerary and guest count.
How long should Birmingham church family photographs take?
Around twenty minutes is a planning target for a concise immediate-family list. The time will depend on numbers, mobility, light and the church's exit or grounds restrictions. Confirm that window with the church.
Can Cameraboss cover the traditional ceremony as well as the church wedding?
Yes. We photograph and film Christian, traditional and multicultural celebrations, whether they take place on the same day, across a weekend or in different UK cities.
