Helen and Jack's wedding at Shottle Hall in Derbyshire gave us a country-house setting, an outdoor ceremony and some lovely portraits together in the gardens. Helen's lace sleeves and long veil brought movement to the photographs; Jack's dark suit and green tie sat beautifully against the greenery.
If you are looking for a Derby wedding photographer, Helen and Jack's gallery gives you a look at the whole approach, from the details before the ceremony to the portraits together afterwards. You can see how the photographs change with the light and how much room there is for the people around them.
This is their story, with wedding photography by CameraBoss.
Wedding photography at Shottle Hall
Shottle Hall is a country-house wedding venue in Shottle, Derbyshire, with gardens and views across the surrounding countryside. For Helen and Jack, the outdoor setting gave the ceremony a backdrop of green hedges and open sky. White flowers and fabric dressed the wooden pergola, with the guests seated either side of the aisle.
I like being able to show the setting without losing the people inside it. A wider photograph lets you see the chairs, the flowers and the landscape. Move closer, and the picture becomes about a hand on a veil or the way two people look at each other.

The details before the ceremony
One of my favourite photographs from the preparations catches Helen's face in a small mirror. Most of the frame falls into shadow, leaving her expression in the light. It is a very different picture from a full-length bridal portrait, and both deserve a place in the gallery.

The rings sit between the bridal shoes in another frame. Their shapes make a simple composition, with the detail kept close. Elsewhere, the photographs give Helen's dress more space: the fitted lace, the neckline and the veil lifting out behind her.

These are the pictures I encourage couples to make a little time for. You have chosen the clothes and the details carefully. A few photographs before the ceremony help you remember how they looked before the rest of the day took over.

The ceremony in the gardens
Under the pergola, Jack holds a microphone and a sheet of paper as Helen faces him beneath her veil. The wider frames show the guests watching from their seats. In the closer photographs, the white flowers and fabric soften into the background.
There is a sequence of Jack lifting Helen's veil, followed by their kiss. I like keeping the photographs around a moment as well as the moment itself. The position of a hand or a small change in expression can give a wedding album its pace.

The walk back through the guests brings a different energy. There is confetti in the air, Helen is smiling, and Jack has his arm raised. After the closer ceremony photographs, the wider view brings everyone back into the story.

Wedding pictures at Shottle Hall: time for the two of them
Outside the house, the brickwork and clipped hedges make a simple setting for Helen and Jack's portraits. In the wider pictures you can see the shape of Helen's dress and the steps behind them. A closer photograph brings their faces together, with the white bouquet at the bottom of the frame.
My approach is to give enough direction to help a portrait work, then allow the couple to settle into it. You should be able to recognise yourselves in the finished pictures. I also want you to have time with the people who have come to celebrate with you, so we talk about portraits when planning the day's coverage.

The bridesmaids' green dresses bring another colour into the pictures outside the house. The group photographs belong in the story alongside the couple portraits: the people beside you are part of what you will want to remember.

What to look for in a Derby wedding photographer
When you are choosing a photographer for a Derby or Derbyshire wedding, ask to see the parts of a gallery beyond the opening portraits. Helen and Jack's photographs move from shaded preparations to bright outdoor portraits, then into the ceremony and the pictures with their guests. Seeing that range gives you more to judge than one striking image.
Look closely at skin tones and white clothing in the same frame. In Helen and Jack's photographs, the lace needs to remain visible, and both faces need careful attention when they are standing together. That is a useful detail to examine in any portfolio, especially if you and your partner have different skin tones.
Think about how you want the day to feel, too. If you want an outdoor ceremony and photographs with a long veil, share those plans early. Talk through the ceremony time and the places available for portraits with your venue and photographer. For a Shottle Hall celebration, we can plan around the gardens, an indoor option if needed and your guests' comfort.

Looking for a Nigerian wedding photographer in Derby?
I'm John Lekan, a British-Nigerian wedding photographer working across Derby and Derbyshire from my UK bases. If you are looking for a Nigerian wedding photographer in Derby, tell me where you are celebrating and the events you would like covered. We will discuss your date and plans, then confirm availability and the coverage that fits.
Tell me about the traditions you want photographed and who needs to be in the family pictures. If your plans include a traditional celebration as well as a white wedding, include both in your enquiry. Knowing what matters to your families helps us plan the coverage around the actual events.
You can also ask about photography and videography together. Planning both around one schedule gives us a chance to agree space for the portraits, the spoken moments you want recorded and the parts of the celebration you want to enjoy without interruption.
For celebrations elsewhere, browse our UK photography and videography locations. Wherever you are planning to celebrate, the first conversation is about your own plans and what you would like to keep from the day.
