Some love stories feel written long before the couple ever meets. Years ago, Joanna's parents prayed for a son they would name Jonathan. In another family, in another part of the country, Jonathon's grandmother lost a baby daughter she had named Joanna Rutherford. Decades later, Joanna Ochogwu walked down the aisle to become Joanna Rutherford, and the names that had waited a lifetime finally came home.
As a Nigerian wedding photographer covering Newcastle and the North East, this is exactly the kind of story I live to tell: two cultures, one faith, and a celebration that married Benue State to Northumberland in a single unforgettable day.
A love story written in advance
Joanna, a plastic surgery resident with Idoma roots in Benue State, Nigeria, and Jonathon, a forensic nurse from Northumberland, first connected online. Their first date was an indoor climbing wall, which tells you everything about a couple who would rather laugh their way up a challenge together than sit still. Faith sat at the centre of their relationship from the start, and by the time they reached their wedding day, the providence woven through their names felt less like coincidence and more like confirmation.
For couples planning a cross-cultural celebration, that authenticity is everything, and it is what I aim to protect in every frame of my wedding photography.
The Idoma traditional ceremony: Benue State comes to the North East
The day opened with a traditional Idoma ceremony, a striking celebration of Joanna's heritage rendered in bold black and red. Idoma weddings are rich with colour, music, family and ceremony, and bringing that energy to a Newcastle-area celebration created something genuinely rare in the North East of England. The regalia, the beadwork and the joy of two families coming together made this one of the most visually powerful parts of the day.
If you love this side of the celebration, you will enjoy a Yoruba wedding at The Decorium London and a Nigerian-Ghanaian celebration in Asaba, both captured in the same storytelling style.
A North East church wedding at St James', Morpeth
From tradition the day moved into the Christian ceremony at St James' Church in Morpeth, Northumberland. Joanna was radiant in an ivory satin sweetheart ballgown, while Jonathon honoured British tradition in classic morning dress. The contrast between the black-and-red regalia of the morning and the soft ivory of the church captured the heart of this Anglo-Nigerian wedding: two heritages, equally celebrated, neither diluted.
Capturing a day with this many moving parts is where experience matters. You can read more about how I work with couples from the first conversation to the final gallery.
A candlelit reception at Beamish Hall, County Durham
The celebration came together at Beamish Hall in County Durham, a short drive from Newcastle and a setting made for atmosphere. A vintage London bus carried the couple and their party, candlelight pooled across the tables, and rich floral arrangements tied British elegance to Nigerian splendour. From first dance to final send-off, the room held the kind of warmth that only happens when two families fully fold into one.
For couples who want their day captured in motion as well as stills, my wedding videography brings the sound, movement and emotion of a day like this back to life.
Why Newcastle and the North East need a Nigerian wedding photographer
Newcastle, Gateshead, County Durham and Northumberland are home to a growing community of Nigerian and African families, and a traditional ceremony deserves a photographer who understands its rhythm, its etiquette and its meaning. As a Nigerian wedding photographer working across Newcastle and the wider North East, I bring both cultural fluency and a clean, natural editing style that lets the colour and emotion of the day speak for itself.
This same approach travels with me. You can see a civil wedding in Leeds for a sense of how I document Nigerian and African couples across the UK, and meet the photographer behind Cameraboss to learn how the studio began.
