A Newcastle Anglo-Nigerian Wedding at Beamish Hall: Joanna & Jonathon

A love story written in advance

Joanna, a plastic surgery resident with Idoma roots in Benue State, Nigeria, and Jonathon, a forensic nurse from Northumberland, first connected online. Their first date was an indoor climbing wall, which tells you everything about a couple who would rather laugh their way up a challenge together than sit still. Faith sat at the centre of their relationship from the start, and by the time they reached their wedding day, the providence woven through their names felt less like coincidence and more like confirmation.

The Idoma traditional ceremony: Benue State comes to the North East

The day opened with a traditional Idoma ceremony, a striking celebration of Joanna's heritage rendered in bold black and red. Idoma weddings are rich with colour, music, family and ceremony, and bringing that energy to a Newcastle-area celebration created something genuinely rare in the North East of England. The regalia, the beadwork and the joy of two families coming together made this one of the most visually powerful parts of the day.

A North East church wedding at St James', Morpeth

From tradition the day moved into the Christian ceremony at St James' Church in Morpeth, Northumberland. Joanna was radiant in an ivory satin sweetheart ballgown, while Jonathon honoured British tradition in classic morning dress. The contrast between the black-and-red regalia of the morning and the soft ivory of the church captured the heart of this Anglo-Nigerian wedding: two heritages, equally celebrated, neither diluted.

A candlelit reception at Beamish Hall, County Durham

The celebration came together at Beamish Hall in County Durham, a short drive from Newcastle and a setting made for atmosphere. A vintage London bus carried the couple and their party, candlelight pooled across the tables, and rich floral arrangements tied British elegance to Nigerian splendour. From first dance to final send-off, the room held the kind of warmth that only happens when two families fully fold into one.
