Search for a wedding photographer in Leicester and you'll find plenty of beautiful portfolios, a wide spread of prices, and very little help working out which one is right for you. As a Leicester-based team that photographs weddings across the East Midlands, we've written this guide from the other side of the lens: what couples should look for, what to ask before paying a deposit, and what a fair package should include. Use it as a checklist when you start comparing photographers, whatever your style, culture or budget.
You've set the date, chosen the venue and started on the guest list. Now comes one of the decisions couples care about most: who will photograph your wedding? Most things at a wedding are over in a day. The food is eaten, the flowers fade and the music stops. Your photographs are what you keep, and they're what you'll show your children and grandchildren.
A good wedding photographer in Leicester does more than take nice pictures. They keep the day moving, put nervous people at ease, and notice the moments you'll miss yourself - your dad's face as you walk in, the laughter in the back row, the quiet minute together after the ceremony.
1. Start With Their Style, Not Their Price
Every photographer has a style, and it should match what you want from your day. The most common approaches are natural and documentary, editorial and fine art, traditional posed, or a blend of the three. If you want to enjoy your day rather than perform for a camera, look for someone who works quietly and directs only when it matters.
Our own approach is fun, natural and unobtrusive. We want you present at your wedding, with just enough direction to get the portraits you'll want framed. Whichever photographer you consider, ask to see a full wedding gallery, not just a highlights reel. A full gallery shows how they handle every part of the day, including dark reception rooms, tight getting-ready spaces and bad weather.
2. Choose Someone Who Knows Leicester Venues
Leicester and Leicestershire offer a wide mix of settings, from historic churches and city-centre hotels to country houses, gardens and large event halls. Each brings its own challenges: limited natural light, tight spaces, restrictions during the ceremony, or strict timings. A photographer who has worked locally already knows where the light falls, which spots work for portraits and how long it takes to move between locations.
That experience saves time on the day and gives you more usable photographs. If you're still deciding on a venue, start with our guide to the top event halls in Leicester for weddings and receptions. If you like the idea of a heritage setting, Leicester Guildhall is one option to look at, and it's worth asking any photographer how they handle the lighting and timings in older buildings.
3. Understand What's Included in the Price
Wedding photography pricing can be confusing, and two quotes that look similar can include very different things. Before you compare, ask every photographer these questions:
- How many hours of coverage are included?
- Are travel costs included, or charged separately?
- Is VAT included in the quoted price?
- Will you receive all the edited photos, and in what format?
- Do you get full printing rights, or do you pay to print your own photos?
- Is there an online gallery your family and guests can use?
With Cameraboss, wedding photography in Leicester starts from £700. Travel within our service area is included and VAT is already covered in the final price, so there are no surprises. Every photograph is professionally edited and delivered on a USB drive in high and low resolution, with full printing rights. You also get a private, password-protected online gallery where you and your guests can view, download and order prints and products.
You can see every option, including prints and album packages, on our pricing page. Each package can be customised to suit you.
4. Think About Photography and Video Together
Photographs and film do different jobs. A photograph captures a single perfect moment. Film captures the sound of your vows, the speeches and your first dance. Booking both with one team can make the day simpler: fewer people to coordinate, and a photographer and videographer who already work well together. Our Leicester wedding video packages start from £500, and you can see our work on the wedding videos page.
5. Check They Understand Your Wedding Traditions
Leicester is one of the most diverse cities in the UK, and many weddings here include cultural and religious traditions, multiple outfit changes, large guest lists and longer celebrations. A photographer who understands your traditions knows which moments matter, from the entrance dances and family blessings to the large group photographs in full Aso-Ebi and gele.
As a Nigerian wedding photographer team based in Leicester, we photograph traditional ceremonies and white weddings alongside classic English and multicultural celebrations. If this is part of your day, read our guide to planning African and Nigerian wedding photography in the UK and our post on a Nigerian wedding photographer in Leicester who knows every venue. Our traditional ceremony work is on the Aworan page.
6. Book Early
Popular wedding dates are often taken a year or more ahead, particularly Saturdays in spring and summer. The best time to enquire is as soon as your venue is confirmed, even if you haven't settled the rest of your plans. We're currently booking 2027 and 2028 weddings, and you can check your date on our contact page.
Don't forget the legal side while you're planning. Couples marrying outside the Church of England must give notice at their local register office, and the notice period is at least 29 calendar days before the ceremony. You can find out how it works for Leicestershire residents or for Leicester City residents, and confirm your photographer's date once your ceremony time is booked.
7. Speak to Them Before You Book
You'll spend more of your wedding day with your photographer than with most of your guests, so personality matters as much as skill. Arrange a call or meeting and ask yourself whether they listened, whether they feel easy to be around, and whether you can picture them in the room while you get ready. Read what other couples say too - recent feedback is on our testimonials page.
Questions to Ask Any Wedding Photographer
- Are you free on our date, and what happens if you're ill?
- Have you photographed at our venue, or ones like it?
- How long until we receive our photographs?
- Do you have insurance?
- Will you work with our planner and videographer?
- How do payments work, and what is your cancellation policy?
