A Birmingham engagement or wedding shoot needs more than a list of backgrounds. The council charges for commercial wedding photography in parks, the canals have separate rules and an hourly rate, and the Library terraces close at three. Check access and costs for your chosen locations before setting the time.
Who to ask about photography permission
Different parts of Birmingham have different landowners. The council manages parks and public squares and requires a permit for filming on its land. The canals belong to the Canal and River Trust. The Botanical Gardens and Winterbourne manage their own access, while Digbeth includes public highways and private estates.
Film Birmingham has moved to Production Central WM, the contact for filming and photography permissions across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Confirm the fees and insurance requirements for your session with the relevant authority or venue.
Ask about an organised portrait session even if it involves only a couple and a photographer. Lighting stands, a crew or clothing that obstructs a path can change the permission requirements. Have any agreed paperwork with you on the day.

The ten locations
1. Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Westbourne Road, Edgbaston B15 3TR
Check the Botanical Gardens’ personal-photoshoot rules for fees and insurance requirements. Last entry is two hours before closing, and photography must finish 30 minutes before the gates shut. You do not get exclusive use, and drones and changing facilities are unavailable. The Victorian glasshouses provide shelter and diffused light on a grey day. The lawn aviary was removed in late 2024, so older photographs may show a background you can no longer use.
2. Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston and Balsall Heath B12
Cannon Hill Park has formal bedding, a boating lake and avenues of mature trees. Check public access before visiting and ask about the fee and insurance requirements for commercial wedding photography. Weekdays are easier for portraits; on warm Saturdays, crowds build from eleven onwards and can fill a wide background. The council explains its requirements for photography and events in parks and open spaces.
3. Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield B74
Sutton Park is a National Nature Reserve of around 2,400 acres, with open heathland where you can frame a couple without buildings behind them. Confirm fees and insurance for your shoot. Bring boots for the tracks near Blackroot Pool, which become muddy after rain, and plan around the lack of shelter.
4. Gas Street Basin and the Brindleyplace towpaths B1
Gas Street Basin and the Brindleyplace towpaths fall under the Canal and River Trust. Check its fees and insurance requirements before planning photography. The Gas Street towpath is narrow and shared with cyclists, leaving little room to step back. The bridge and basin mouth provide more workable viewpoints. See the Trust’s filming-location fees.
5. The Secret Garden, Level 7, Library of Birmingham, Centenary Square B1
The Secret Garden is free, accessible by lift and has a 360-degree view across the city and canals. The terraces open Monday to Saturday from 11am to 3pm, so a sunset session will not fit those hours. A weekday visit is usually quieter. Use the skyline as a background and plan how to handle the midday light on faces.
6. Digbeth street art: Floodgate Street and Heath Mill Lane B9
The murals on Floodgate Street and Heath Mill Lane are on public highways and free to view. The Custard Factory is a private estate, so ask its office about an organised shoot there. Scout the murals within a fortnight of the session because they are repainted frequently. Digbeth is also a working industrial area, with HS2 works, lorries and skips that can affect access to a particular wall.
7. Winterbourne House and Garden, 58 Edgbaston Park Road B15 2RT
Winterbourne House and Garden belongs to the University of Birmingham. It does not host weddings, but permits personal and commercial photography in the garden. Book through the enquiry form at least 48 hours ahead and allow three to five working days for a reply. Photography sessions are not permitted inside the house, and drones are banned across the campus. Edgbaston Pool needs a valid ticket and access is controlled by the adjoining golf club; call before including it in your route.
8. Highbury Hall and Highbury Park, Moseley B13
Highbury Hall is a Grade II listed Victorian mansion built in 1876 for Joseph Chamberlain. The council’s civic catering team runs it, with civil ceremonies and wedding breakfasts for up to 100 and evening receptions for 150. A wedding booking includes the landscaped grounds, with adjoining Highbury Park providing further portrait options. A separate shoot needs the hall’s permission, while the standard council charge applies in the park. The Gothic brick and mature trees work well in soft autumn light.
9. Aston Hall, Trinity Road B6
Aston Hall is a Jacobean house built between 1618 and 1635. Check access to the grounds during its opening hours, Friday to Sunday from 11am to 4pm. It closes for winter from 2 November 2026, apart from special events, with standard hours due to resume on 13 February 2027. Plan an autumn visit before that closure if you want the frontage. Its red brick catches warm late light, though closing time limits how much you can use.
10. Great Western Arcade, Colmore Row to Temple Row B2 5HU
Great Western Arcade is a Grade II listed Victorian arcade, built in 1875 and 1876 over the Great Western Railway cutting. It provides an architectural background under cover. Entry is free; opening hours are 9am to 6pm Monday to Wednesday and Saturday, 9am to 8pm Thursday and Friday, and 11am to 5pm Sunday. Visit near Sunday opening for a quieter session. Keep tripods out of the walkway and be prepared to discuss the shoot with shopkeepers.

Planning your Birmingham shoot
I would choose two locations for a 90-minute to two-hour engagement session. Moving between spots can take 20 to 30 minutes once parking is included. Leave enough time to explore each place and settle into the photographs.
Set the time around daylight and opening hours. In high summer, soft evening light can last beyond eight; by late December, daylight ends before four. A morning or early daytime winter session gives you more room in the schedule. The Library terraces, which close at three, fit that daytime approach.
Check the practical details the day before. Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone covers the city centre, so confirm your vehicle’s status before driving in. Match days at Villa Park or a Test at Edgbaston can affect traffic. For wet weather, check access to the Botanical glasshouses or Great Western Arcade in advance. The earlier guide to outdoor photography locations in Birmingham has more ideas, and our editorial and pre-wedding shoot page explains the sessions.
Working with Cameraboss in Birmingham
I am a British Nigerian wedding photographer working in luxury and documentary styles, from Leicester and London, with regular Birmingham coverage. I was named Creative Photographer of the Year at the Creative Industry Awards 2024. If you book photography and film, confirm the staffing and shared timeline. We confirm travel and any overnight arrangements in your written quote. See the areas page for coverage and the pricing page for current starting prices.
For Birmingham’s multicultural weddings, I plan around the ceremony’s running order. At a Yoruba engagement or Nikkah, knowing what comes next helps me be in the right position for it. You can see traditional ceremony work on the Aworan page and full weddings in the client galleries.
For full day West Midlands budgeting, £1,050 and a wider £900 to £2,500 range are illustrative amounts to compare with quotes. Bridebook’s UK average for 2026 is £1,484. Ask what hours and editing each quote includes. A ten hour wedding can produce 3,000 to 5,000 raw frames, followed by 20 to 30 hours of culling and grading, including careful work on darker skin tones.
Common questions
Q: Do we need a permit to shoot at Cannon Hill Park or Sutton Park?A: A commercial wedding shoot needs permission. Confirm fees and insurance with the council or relevant authority before booking. Entry on foot remains free.
Q: Can we shoot at the Library of Birmingham Secret Garden at sunset?A: The Level 7 terraces open Monday to Saturday from 11am to 3pm, so sunset falls outside their hours. We would need another viewpoint for a golden-hour skyline photograph.
Q: Do you charge travel to Birmingham?A: Birmingham is within reach of my Leicester base. Send the venue and timetable so we can discuss travel and whether a hotel is needed. Confirm any travel and accommodation charges in the written quote.
Q: How far in advance should we book a Birmingham engagement shoot?A: Four to six weeks gives us time to plan. Allow longer for Winterbourne, which takes three to five working days to confirm. Autumn dates can fill quickly, and Aston Hall closes for winter from early November.
Q: Do you cover Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Wolverhampton?A: Yes, along with West Bromwich, Walsall and Coventry. We cover the West Midlands conurbation and can plan a city-centre location and a greener setting in the same session.
