For an autumn or winter engagement shoot in Coventry, start with the setting you want. Coombe Abbey Park has autumn woodland and gardens; Coventry Cathedral Ruins provide architecture when the trees are bare. War Memorial Park has long paths and straightforward parking, while Coventry Canal Basin offers a city route when parkland is muddy.
Check the access arrangements before choosing a date. Coombe Abbey Park requires advance permission and a fee for professional photography. Coventry Cathedral requires commercial permission. War Memorial Park is open 24 hours, and the Canal Basin is open all year, but opening for visitors does not settle the requirements for a paid session. Confirm parking, admission and photography terms with the relevant team.
1. Coombe Abbey Park: autumn gardens and advance permission
Coombe Abbey Park is on Brinklow Road, Binley, Coventry CV3 2AB. Coventry City Council describes around 500 acres of parkland, with formal gardens, paths and a lake, plus woodland around the historic Coombe Abbey setting.
A paid engagement or pre-wedding shoot needs permission. Confirm the professional-photography fee with Coventry City Council and allow at least 28 days’ notice under its guidance. Have proof of the booking available for park staff.
That permission covers formal gardens and parkland only. It excludes the hotel interior and grounds, front and rear terraces, courtyards and outbuildings. Requests are checked against Coombe Abbey Hotel weddings, and photography may be refused where a wedding is taking place.
I would plan Coombe ahead if you want formal gardens, water and woodland in the same session. Include the permission cost in your budget. War Memorial Park or the Canal Basin may be alternatives, but confirm their arrangements before comparing costs.
Published car-park hours are 5am to 8pm daily, with exit possible afterwards. The Visitor Centre opens from 10am to 4pm. Parking uses ANPR and pay-on-foot; check the council’s tariff before arriving.
There are no changing facilities for photography clients, and the park permission does not allow use of hotel facilities. If you want two outfits, change before arrival or arrange a nearby private space.
Coombe suits autumn colour and formal or traditional outfits. Plan one or two looks and arrange professional-photography permission in advance.
Check commercial photography and filming, opening times and parking.
2. Coventry Cathedral Ruins: architecture for a winter shoot
Coventry Cathedral is at 11 Priory Row, Coventry CV1 5EX. The medieval Cathedral of St Michael was destroyed in the 1940 Blitz. Its Ruins stand beside the modern Cathedral, giving the site two different architectural settings.
The Ruins’ stone and arches provide structure for winter photographs without relying on foliage. Open sky and the modern Cathedral add other backgrounds to the route.
The Cathedral welcomes personal photography but requires advance permission for commercial photography or filming. Discuss a paid engagement session with the team before booking it.
Published visiting hours for the New Cathedral and Ruins are Monday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm and Sunday around 12pm to 3.30pm. Check the live calendar for private events and closures. The New Cathedral was closed to visitors for a private event on 6 October 2026, for example.
I would plan around the Ruins and ask the Cathedral team what interior access is available for your date. A visitor timetable cannot guarantee a particular photograph months ahead.
The Cathedral is around a 10 to 15 minute walk from Coventry railway station, about 200 metres from Pool Meadow coach station and roughly 300 metres from Salt Lane multi-storey car park. Disabled parking is available on Cuckoo Lane near Holy Trinity Church.
Consider the Ruins for winter sessions in black tie, an elegant dress or traditional Nigerian outfits, with a recognisable Coventry background.
Check Coventry Cathedral visiting times, photography guidance, The Ruins and travel and parking.

3. War Memorial Park: open paths and accessible parking
War Memorial Park is at Kenilworth Road, Coventry CV3 6PT. It is open all year, 24 hours a day, giving a session flexibility around sunset without a park gate-closing time.
The three main car parks are on Kenilworth Road, Leamington Road and Coat of Arms Bridge Road. They normally open from 6am to 10pm. Check Coventry City Council’s charges and permitted stay for your visit.
The council describes the park as wheelchair-user accessible, with disabled parking bays on Kenilworth Road and Leamington Road. It is worth considering if you need flatter movement and a straightforward walking route.
Long paths, mature trees and open grass give room for walking photographs and relaxed portraits in autumn colour. The Memorial provides a more formal architectural background if you want one.
Confirm the parking tariff and permitted stay for a 60 to 90 minute session. The park is close enough to the city centre to follow the shoot with an indoor activity or dinner without a long drive.
Ask the park team about permission for a small paid session. The council pages linked here do not specify a dedicated professional-couple permit. A larger setup with lighting stands, multiple crew or controlled use of space needs discussing in advance.
Consider War Memorial Park for October and November foliage, relaxed outfits and accessible walking, with several parking options.
Check opening times, parking and accessibility.
4. Coventry Canal Basin: a city route for winter
Coventry Canal Basin is at St Nicholas Street, Coventry CV1 4LY. Coventry City Council describes it as the main city-centre access point to the canal, a short walk from Pool Meadow Bus Station and Broadgate. The canal is open all year; confirm public-admission terms with the council.
I would consider the basin for a winter city session. Towpath lines, brick and water give the photographs texture, with narrowboats and the basin’s architecture as other backgrounds.
Bus routes 20 and 148 stop near the towpath, with a step-free walk from the relevant stop to the basin. Drivers can leave the Ring Road at Junction 1. Pay-and-display parking is on Leicester Row, Draper’s Fields and St Columba’s Close.
Coats, knitwear and smart-casual clothes suit this route. Water reflections and city lighting provide detail for winter evening photographs after the leaves have gone.
The towpath forms part of Coventry Cycle Route 2 and National Cycle Route 52. Keep the session mobile and leave room for other users. I do not block it with lighting stands or pose a couple across its full width.
Ask the relevant team how permission applies to your paid session. A larger crew, substantial lighting or controlled use of the basin needs discussing before the date.
Consider the basin for November to February sessions in casual or editorial clothes, with water and architecture along a city route. Ask about photography costs and access for the basin.
Check Coventry Canal and Canal Basin.

Choosing your autumn or winter location
For Coombe Abbey Park, allow for the permit cost and advance notice if the landscape is the reason for the shoot. Coventry Cathedral Ruins suit an architectural route. War Memorial Park gives you open paths and autumn trees, while the Canal Basin provides city texture when parkland is wet.
Plan the setting with your clothes in mind. A suit, gown or Nigerian traditional outfit works against Cathedral stone or Coombe’s formal gardens. Coats, knitwear and smart-casual clothes also fit the paths in War Memorial Park and the Canal Basin.
Check daylight and access together. The Cathedral generally closes around 4pm on weekdays and Saturdays, so start a winter session early. Coombe’s car park opens until 8pm, but permission and hotel restrictions determine where you can photograph. War Memorial Park’s 24-hour opening gives more timing flexibility.
On a dry October day, I would consider Coombe or War Memorial Park. For a cold December afternoon, the Cathedral Ruins offer architecture without needing foliage. The Canal Basin may suit light rain and wet paving. Adjust the route if the ground is too muddy for a comfortable session.
