Sheffield’s seven hills give you woodland, moorland, Victorian glasshouses and views of its concrete skyline, with some locations about twenty minutes apart. For a portrait session, I look at the walk and available light as well as the background. This guide concentrates on gardens, river valleys and city viewpoints, with a moorland option and the access arrangements to check before you go.
Permission, travel and weather in Sheffield
For a commercial shoot on land managed by Sheffield City Council’s Parks and Countryside service, submit the application in advance. Its Filming and Photography Conditions of Use explain the requirements. Confirm the current fee, notice and insurance directly with the service before booking the session; the park being open to visitors does not cover a professional shoot’s arrangements.
City Centre Management handles central locations separately, requiring written permission, an agreed fee, a risk assessment and proof of insurance. Tell the team about equipment and how you will keep public routes clear. Arranging that beforehand leaves time to change the location if the proposed shoot cannot be approved, rather than trying to resolve access on the morning.
Sheffield’s Clean Air Zone covers the inner ring road and charges eligible vehicles that do not meet its standards. Check the actual supplier vehicles and current rules. Weather also varies across the route: the west climbs roughly 300 metres from the centre to the moor edge, so Crookes can be in cloud while Kelham Island has sunshine. Check the destination’s conditions before leaving the city.

Ten gardens, valleys and viewpoints
1. Sheffield Botanical Gardens, Clarkhouse Road, S10 2LN
Sheffield Botanical Gardens has nineteen acres of Grade II* registered garden and three linked Paxton glass pavilions. Check current visitor terms and arrange commercial photography through Parks and Countryside. On a sunny Saturday, expect to share the paths. The pavilions give light and shelter, the bear pit adds stone and shadow, and the south facing main lawn is useful later in the afternoon. Choose the areas and timing before assuming the whole garden will be quiet.
2. Sheffield Winter Garden and the Peace Gardens, S1 2JF
The Winter Garden and Peace Gardens combine tropical planting under glass with fountains outside, within a ten minute portrait stop. The indoor area offers shelter, but it is a public space in the City Centre Management permit area. It becomes busy from about 10am. I would consider opening time or the last hour before dark, when the glass roof changes colour and interior lights begin to shape the photographs. Confirm access and opening hours for the date.
3. Sheffield General Cemetery, Cemetery Avenue, S11 8NT
Sheffield General Cemetery opened in 1836 and is managed by a charitable trust. Check current access, including the listed 24 hour opening, before visiting. Stone, ivy, Egyptian revival architecture and heavy tree cover give a shaded setting, about two stops darker than nearby open parks. I keep the group small and quiet, stay off graves and arrange commercial permission with the Trust. Respect for the burial ground matters throughout the session.
4. Endcliffe Park and the Porter Valley, S11 8TG
Endcliffe starts a four mile green corridor from Hunter’s Bar towards the moors, with water, bridges, meadow and mature trees along the Porter Valley. It can give three different backgrounds without three car journeys. The council’s Parks and Countryside permission process applies. Parking near Rustlings Road is difficult on weekend afternoons, so consider arriving before 10am or using a weekday evening. Include the walk from the car to your chosen part of the park.
5. Forge Dam, Fulwood, S10 4PH
Forge Dam is farther up the valley at Fulwood. On a still morning, the millpond can give clear reflections. The café end attracts families; five minutes upstream brings more woodland, though it remains shared space. Dappled canopy light may suit portraits of two better than a group of twelve, where faces can fall in different patches of sun. The same council permission route applies as at Endcliffe.
6. Whirlow Brook Park, Ecclesall Road South, S11 9QE
Whirlow Brook Park has formal gardens, a lake, a rock garden and a rhododendron walk on Sheffield’s southwestern edge, beside a licensed venue. May and June are useful for rhododendron colour. The formal terraces face west, giving an option for evening light. It is council managed, so arrange permission before the session and confirm which areas are available alongside any venue event.
7. Rivelin Valley, S6 5GH
Rivelin Valley follows five miles of wooded river, with remains of twenty industrial mill dams. Waterfalls, moss and stone weirs give several settings on the walk. The ground can be wet, uneven and slippery, so bring sensible shoes and carry heels if you want them for the last ten frames. Parks and Countryside permission applies. Allow time to reach the chosen spot instead of spending most of the session walking there.
8. Bolehills, Crookes, S10 1SD
Bolehills in Crookes is a hillside recreation ground with views across the city and Don Valley towards the east. It is exposed, with an easterly and southeasterly aspect, so sunrise or blue hour may suit the view better than sunset. Wind can keep moving a veil. Plan clothing and hair with that in mind, and confirm the council access arrangements as part of choosing the location.
9. Park Hill and the “I Love You Will U Marry Me” bridge, S2 5QY
The Park Hill proposal lettering was painted on a walkway in 2001 and reinstated in neon by the developer in 2022. Concrete, coloured panels and the city view give a distinct setting, including after dark. Park Hill is a private residential estate: agree access with management, keep to permitted walkways and leave doorways and routes clear. People live there, so a photograph should not require them to wait or change their way home.
10. Burbage Edge and the Stanage and North Lees estate, S11 7TZ
Burbage is about fifteen minutes from Ecclesall Road, on gritstone moor in the Peak District National Park. The 542 hectare Stanage and North Lees estate is managed by the Peak District National Park Authority. Ask it about the specific commercial photography arrangement through filming@peakdistrict.gov.uk; elsewhere, check the primary landowner. Conditions change quickly on the moor. Allow an hour of slack and agree when you would abandon the outdoor plan, rather than press on for a photograph in unsuitable weather.

Choosing a route and start time
A two hour engagement or editorial session usually works best with two settings and one outfit change. Travel, parking and finding the light can use a third of the time. If four locations are appealing, narrow the route to the two that give you the backgrounds you most want, leaving time to settle and take photographs at each.
Sunset is just after 3.45pm in late December and past 9.30pm in mid June, close to a six hour difference. I plan around the last hour of daylight where the location suits it, then work back through the journey. Sheffield’s annual rain figure is around 800mm, so discuss an indoor option such as the Winter Garden alongside the outdoor route. Confirm its permission and availability before relying on it.
The council can refuse applications submitted without reasonable notice. Allow two to three weeks as a planning margin and confirm the required lead time with the manager. Two days may leave no time to resolve a question about equipment, access or the location itself.
Photography with Cameraboss in Sheffield
I am John Lekan, a British Nigerian luxury and documentary wedding photographer based in Leicester and London, named Creative Photographer of the Year at the Creative Industry Awards 2024. Sheffield is a run up the M1 from Leicester, including for weekday evening engagement sessions. The Sheffield and UK coverage page includes Rotherham, Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster and the Derbyshire Peak. Tell me if the session moves between those areas so that the route is included in the plan.
I adjust exposure and grade photographs for the people and light in front of me, including darker skin under heavy tree cover. You can browse the Aworan portfolio when discussing the work. Wedding coverage is listed as starting at £2,500, with standalone engagement sessions from £500. Film coverage needs confirming for your booking. Read the current pricing and contact us about your plans to agree the coverage and inclusions in your written quote.
Choose a location you can reach with enough time to use its light, then arrange access before confirming the session. If you are also considering the North West, the Liverpool wedding venues guide discusses room lighting, portraits and timings there.
Common questions

How is travel to Sheffield quoted?Travel from Leicester is discussed in the quote before booking, including for weekday evening sessions. Send the locations and timings so that the full arrangements and cost are clear at the start.
