Leicester Town Hall hosts around a thousand marriages and civil partnerships a year across four rooms. Before choosing one, look at its light, space and photography rules as well as the guest capacity. Those details affect how much of your ceremony and family groups the photographer can cover.
Planning your Leicester ceremony and reception
Leicester City Council records roughly 1,000 marriages and civil partnerships each year at the Town Hall alone, in addition to ceremonies at approved premises. A civic ceremony followed by a reception elsewhere needs a schedule that allows for both buildings and the journey between them.
Leicester’s multicultural weddings can call for very different coverage. A thirty-guest Fountain Room ceremony at eleven needs a different plan from a four-hundred-guest reception with two outfit changes and a live band. The staffing should fit the size and running order of the day.
Daylight matters when you choose the ceremony time. In late December, Leicester sunset is just before four, leaving little outdoor portrait time after a three o’clock ceremony. In mid-June it is after half past nine. Use that difference when planning the schedule. The Leicester and Leicestershire coverage page lists the areas I work in.
Leicester Town Hall’s four ceremony rooms
The Town Hall has four licensed rooms. The Oak Room is a former courtroom with wooden panelling and chandeliers, holding 80 including the couple and two witnesses. The Fountain Room holds 40, with large sash windows overlooking the fountain. The Laurel Room takes 10. The Cherry Room holds four, is available only on Wednesday afternoons and also serves as a working office.
The Fountain Room’s sash windows provide plenty of natural light, though on a bright day it is directional enough that moving about a foot can change how it falls on a face. The Oak Room is darker and warmer. Its panelling absorbs reflected light, so photographing under the chandeliers can require high ISO. Ask your photographer how they would handle the room you choose.
The Town Hall’s published rules prohibit photographs during the ceremony. A registrar will re-stage signing the schedule afterwards. Up to two video cameras are permitted if they are battery operated and kept stationary, so a roaming operator cannot film the ceremony. Confetti is allowed only outside. Enter from Town Hall Square; lift access is on Horsefair Street.
Oak and Fountain couples can use the photographic room for up to 15 minutes after the ceremony, with scenic backdrops or a neutral curtained wall. Give your photographer a written group list the week before. Eight or nine groups may fit into those fifteen minutes with preparation; organising people on the day can reduce that to around four.

Guildhall, Leicester Museum and the City Rooms
Leicester Guildhall, in the Old Town, has over 600 years of history and two licensed ceremony rooms. Its 14th-century timber-framed Great Hall takes up to 90 guests. The Mayor’s Parlour takes up to 30, with 15th-century stained glass, a carved fireplace and oak-panelled walls. Confirm fees and insurance requirements directly. The private enclosed courtyard provides daylight for group photographs outside the darker timber rooms. In winter, the Great Hall has an open fire.
Leicester Museum & Art Gallery, on New Walk, offers ceremonies in the Victorian Art Gallery among works by Turner, Rodin and Degas, as well as in the dinosaur and fossil galleries. Confirm fees and insurance requirements. The museum is five minutes from the station, with limited parking. Museum Square and the townhouses along New Walk provide outdoor portrait backgrounds. Weddings resumed in 2026 following renovation of the event spaces, so check room availability before planning around them.
The City Rooms, at 16 Hotel Street, is a Grade I listed Georgian building with three function suites and a bar. Each suite has its own licence for civil ceremonies and partnerships. Its dedicated Asian wedding offering has a catering arm, worth discussing if your menu is an important part of the celebration.
Winstanley House and larger reception venues
Winstanley House is a Grade II listed Georgian mansion on Hinckley Road in Braunstone Park, two miles from the city centre. It is licensed for ceremonies. The Pavilion Ballroom seats up to 150 and the Grand Ballroom up to 450, with capacity rising to around 550 when a marquee is used. Outdoor ceremonies are an option in suitable weather; view the indoor fallback as part of your visit.
Mattioli Woods Welford Road and the National Space Centre on Exploration Drive are both licensed for ceremonies and have large event spaces. Welford Road’s Premiership Suite takes 1,250 for a reception, while the Space Centre is listed at up to 500. Ask for the capacity of your licensed ceremony room separately from the reception or building capacity.
Above roughly 300 guests, check doorways and the photographer’s viewpoint as well as floor space. For a 400-guest group photograph, I would look for a balcony, staircase landing or stage with room to step back. Allow enough time to gather everyone. Winstanley’s parkland also gives a couple space for ten quiet minutes of portraits away from the reception.

Room hire, registrars and photography costs
A venue’s ceremony licence covers the room. You still need to arrange the legal ceremony and registrars, as explained in the GOV.UK guidance. Confirm the relevant fees and insurance requirements with the venue or responsible authority.
Town Hall room fees vary by day of the week. Confirm the price and any insurance requirements for your booking. The published fee period runs until 31 March 2027, with a review each April.
Bridebook’s 2026 report puts average UK photography spending at £1,484. For a full day, £1,813 is an illustrative quote amount to compare, with an extra £200 to £500 as an example of how another location could affect the budget. Check the hours and work included in each quote. A ten hour wedding can produce 3,000 to 5,000 raw frames, with 20 to 30 hours of culling, editing and grading afterwards. The Cameraboss pricing page gives current starting prices; confirm your booking's coverage and inclusions in writing.
Working with Cameraboss in Leicester
Leicester and London are my two bases. I am a British Nigerian wedding photographer working in luxury and documentary styles, and was named Creative Photographer of the Year at the Creative Industry Awards 2024. If you want photography and film, confirm the staffing and agree the running order for both services. Our wedding film work shows the film coverage to consider alongside the stills.
I plan around the running order of a Yoruba engagement, Nikkah or Hindu ceremony so I can be in position before the next moment, while respecting times when I should leave the room. You can see traditional and Nigerian ceremony work on the Aworan page and full weddings in the client galleries.
I expose and grade carefully for darker skin tones. Warm chandeliers in the Oak Room and coloured uplighters in a reception hall can shift skin towards grey or orange if handled with a generic preset. I account for the light while photographing and when editing the gallery.
I cover Leicester, Loughborough and Hinckley, along with Market Harborough, Oadby, Wigston, Syston and Melton Mowbray. Include Derby, Nottingham, Newcastle or Liverpool if your plans take you further afield. Discuss the journey and whether an overnight stay is needed, then confirm arrangements and costs in your written quote. For a hall reception, the companion guide to event halls in Leicester covers capacities and catering rules.
